Chinese Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year, otherwise known as the Chinese Lunar New Year, is a very much celebrated festival in Singapore. Although majority of the population in Singapore consists of the Chinese race, however, not only do the Chinese celebrate during this festival.

This is in fact an occasion where the Malays, Indians, and people from all walks of life take part in the festive celebrations in Singapore as well.

The traditional goodies are just one of the many highlights during this
auspicious festival, and, needless to say, the hot favourite of a typical Singaporean. Such treats would include the Pineapple tarts, Love letters, Yu Sheng (raw fish salad), Dumplings and of course, the sweet Tangerines! Of course, for many of us, we tend to benefit when our mothers and grandmothers would stay at home baking and making the goodies as part of the yearly preparations!

This season is usually this period of time when we are welcomed home after
a long day of school with aromas from the baking wafting into our noses! It has also been quite a bit of routine now for Chinese neighbours to exchange goodies. For example, my mother might make pineapple tarts for a neighbour and the neighbour might in turn make delicious love letters for my family!

The Chinese New Year also has many interesting stories and beliefs behind it. For one, there is the belief that the festival should be celebrated with firecrackers, lanterns and torches, to chase away the kuei (evil spirits), who are believed to be dispersed by light and noise.

Exceptions have been made for this special festival, Chinese New Year. Every year, during the nation-wide countdown event, firecrackers are lit up in Chinatown. This heritage-based place, bustling in frenzy most of the time, is also a hotspot for Singaporeans and tourists alike to snatch up and savour the many traditional goodies fresh from the oven.

Due to our enthusiasm in celebrating this festival, making sure we all have a blast, people from all over Singapore travel down to Chinatown to feel the atmosphere of the festival! Many people, especially those who might have just moved, might hire people to perform the dance during this festive season!

The lion dancers would then, entertain the family and crowds with tricks and stunts to keep the happy atmosphere of the season going.

So if you were to visit a friend in Singapore during this festive season, do not be surprised if you suddenly hear cheers and loud drumming coming from the neighbouring homes! Dragon dances and lion dances also take place in streets
and public places throughout the first few days of the ChineseNew Year.

At the same time, the colour red is believed to be able to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck to the family. Perhaps this is why much of the Lunar New Year’s decorations are made in red! There all many types of decorations available, ranging from auspicious Chinese words with glitter to decorations made accordingly to the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, depending on what year it is.

For example, this year is the year of the rat, and during visits to many relatives’ homes, they even pasted decorations of Mickey Mouse on their doors! Some even hung key chains moulded to the shape of a rat on their plants!

Chinatown, with its decorations during the season is a must-go venue! It is only there that one can say he, or she has truly experienced the Chinese New Year atmosphere in Singapore! One or two days before the start of celebrations, many people would go down to do any last minute shopping for the highly anticipated festival! Therefore, it is of no surprise that every year the roads get so congested that walking through the crowds can be a bit of a hassle.

However, what is the New Year without such an atmosphere and noise? Thus, a trip down to Chinatown during the festive season whether to try out our traditional goodies, where you can be sure to find every single type of it, or to look at the firecrackers display, or even to just take photos of the decorations and of the area itself, is definitely a priceless experience!

It is on this festive season that we get money in the form of ang-baos, otherwise known an red packets, (which symbolises luck and well-wishing) from our parents and the married relatives and this extra source of ‘pocket money’ for us often means that we will be able to go out with our friends after the season for a movie, or even a chance to finally get the toys and clothes that we have been eyeing for a long time! Next time you see eager children saying well wishes to an adult, you will know why!

So, what are you waiting for? Come and join us in the festive celebrations in the year of the Ox in 2009! (The 15 day celebration starts 26 January 2009.)
What’s more, you’ll get to experience the crowds along the streets of Chinatown, where you will be able to soak up the festive atmosphere and join in the celebrations of one of the most celebrated festivals of the year!

Some personal experiences:

"Absence makes the heart grows fonder! It's good opportunity for me to meet up with my overseas relatives. Boy, I miss them!" -Joanne

"Chinese New Year is one where my cousins and I are looking out for! Thats because we can collect lots of red packets. Not only that, we can have a small bet on blackjacks and mahjong! Fun, laughters and enjoyment is what I receive in the midst of this joyous occasion! 3 cheers to CNY!" -Fabian

"This is one of the markings of the start of my near year where every single person related to my family will meet up and catch up. Young or old. Traditional Goodies are the best! Especially Barbeque pork! Not forgetting the Ang Pao my cousins and I recieve. This season should be labelled- Nothing but Fun. " -Lynn

Countdown 08/09

The New Year is just around the corner! And at this point in time of the year, it’s time to plan for an outing to the one of the many Countdown events hosted in Singapore! Join Singaporeans in our annual tradition, and be sure to spend your night away in excitement!

Countdown 07/08 was definitely an unforgettable experience. Personally, I was at VivoCity (Photo credits: Singapore Tourism Board), one of the biggest shopping malls in Singapore, celebrating that significant moment with my loved ones as well as with a few thousands of Singaporeans gathered there. It was indeed a night filled with fun and joy.

Over at the amphitheatre at VivoCity, thousands of Singaporeans as well as visitors from around the world gathered to celebrate the last few moments of Year 2007 together. Up on stage were celebrities from Mediacorp as well as well-known rock bands giving the audience non-stop live entertainment. It was also telecasted through the television to the other Singaporeans as well as Singaporeans residing overseas.

At the stroke of midnight, everyone’s attentions were captured by the astonishing fireworks display from the nearby island, Sentosa, which was having its very own Siloso Beach Party at the same time. Under the shower of the magnificent fireworks, all of us wished our loved ones and our fellow Singaporeans and visitors a Happy New Year. We expressed our love through smiles, hugs and kisses. It was definitely a heart-touching moment!

Even though we were not physically over at Sentosa to experience the fireworks display at its fullest potential, we could feel the unity of all Singaporeans celebrating that very moment together. The atmosphere around was simply, Uniquely Singapore!

Besides shopping malls like VivoCity hosting their own countdowns, as mentioned above, Sentosa has its very own Siloso Beach Party as well. Below would be a few great recommendations that you might want to give a try for this year’s Countdown: (we assure you that the fun level would be to the max!)

Firstly, the Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown 08/09 is an event that is definitely not worth a miss! (Photo credits: Marina Bay Countdown official website)

The Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown is marked as the biggest New Year’s Eve celebration in Singapore. And since the year 2005, Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown has been an annual tradition for all Singaporeans.

The unique programme, the magnificent fireworks as well as the splendid use of the waters at Marina Bay with Marina Bay’s very own Floating Platform has made Singapore’s Countdown experience a spectacular one!

This is when thousands of Singaporeans unite at this symbolic centre of Singapore. This is also when every individual in Singapore celebrates that significant moment with their loved ones, under the shower of colourful fireworks display.

The Wishing Sphere Project is a significant part under the Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown. This is when 10,000 wishing spheres filled with individuals’ wishes would be placed in the waters of Marina Bays (as shown in the picture above). Be part of the countdown, get down to respective venues and have your wishes written on these significant spheres!

The second event worth a go would be Sentosa’s Siloso Beach Party. Named the Asia Grooviest Party, it is an 10 hour long celebration all the way from 8pm of the 31 December to 6am the next morning. Dance your night away with non-stop hits from local and international celebrity DJs. It’s a time for all to relax, to forget all burdens from 2008 and welcome a whole new year 2009. (Photo credits: visitsingapore.com)

The Siloso Beach Party last year has certainly proved to be the best in Asia! We had a great night of music from DJ Shy, DJ Rough, DJ Jensen and DJ Kavan. New to the party last year were the LIVE Bands. E.I.C, a highly popular local band as well as UK’s top jazz funk and soul band INCOGNITO rocked the night.

And the fun does not end there! Visitors got their bubbly experience at our ever popular foam pool (Photo credits: singaporesights.com), created their own waves with the electronic surfboard, got their 360degrees experience of Year 2008 with the 360 degrees reverse bungee, and they got themselves dunked in the dunking pool.

To add on, there were a great variety of food and drinks to satisfy your appetite through the new year. Also, non-stop performances are available to satisfy your visual cravings!

With all these fun experienced last year, Singapore assures you a higher level of fun at Siloso Beach this year! So get ready your beachwear and head down to Sentosa on 31 December! Enjoy the fun like you've never enjoyed before!

As quoted from one of my friends, "Siloso Beach Party was ultimate! I enjoyed myself to the maximum and you should have been there as well! Getting foamed all over, and having myself turned 360 degrees around was definitely my firsts." Upon hearing this, I told myself that I would not give the Beach Party a miss this year!

End off Year 2008 with a big bang and enjoy the start of Year 2009 to the fullest! Join Singapore in our very own Countdowns!

Some personal experiences:

"Countdown 07/08 was the most memorable one I ever had. As I reminisced, I was at the Padang last year with my family! Though we didnt manage to squeeze our way through the crowd to Marina Bay, the atmosphere at the Padang was equally hot! The fireworks was majestic and awesome even from the view of Padang!" -Fabian

"The past few experiences at the countdown events have been wonderful and amazing with new friends made at the event, being one of the perks. Counting down to a new year with loved ones and friends is definitely memorable! Watching the direct, live telecast on the TV is nothing compared to being at the countdown where we get to see all the performances and of course, to welcome the New Year, LIVE!
" -Eleanor

"This is one of the annual events which I look forward to every year. It marks the beginning of a brand new year and celebrates our achievements for our past year. The fireworks display at the Marina Bay, where thousands of Singaporeans and tourists gather together is definitely the highlight of the event! The enthusiasm and cheers which I observed over the past years at the countdown was really amazing, especially when it comes from the tourists. And this really brings out the spirit of the occasion!" -Joanne

CHRISTMAS IS KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR!

This Christmas will be the sweetest one yet, as the Sweet Family welcomes you into their home of sumptuous candies and magical lights. Streets are transformed into a candy land dripping with gumdrops, liquorice, candy canes and jelly beans, as Christmas carols fill the air with festive cheer. Expect bold colours, sweet smells and enchanting lights, all set to ignite your senses.

I remember a few years back when Christmas in the tropics was already introduced, I was a little girl who cannot wait to take that ride to Tanglin Mall to experience that foam snow every certain time of the night during Christmas season. That was one of the most joyous days of my life. Now, I just look forward to seeing the children laugh and play and just making Christmas one of their fullest in the years to come. Of course not forgetting the amount of shopping bags multiplied every time I get home! The discounts at all the malls are incredible! Every cent I spend was just worthwhile!

The atmosphere of the whole place is just different with the lighting and music all around. The bars of a song and the laughter of the children. Walking along and I just cannot find any reason to not be happy. I even found myself smiling like I had a botox. It is indescribable!

Shopping may be the only thing people can think of when they are at the town area of Singapore, but you might just be surprise to see various performing arts group along side with carols and even entertaining dressed-up Santa! The atmosphere gets better and better every year! Is like every Christmas is the best Christmas ever!

So, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Come on down with your friends and families to join everyone for a memorable Best Christmas celebration Ever!

Singapore River Festival

Be enticed as the inaugural Singapore River Festival brings you along a multi- faceted event celebrating the elements of water, heritage and entertainment after sundown. This festival promises you a never-ending fun in the Night Life of Singapore. In addition, as part of the celebration of this festival, there will be concerts on the river and a music festival along the river promenade. Not forgetting the Party-goers, who will be accompanied by the wide host of outdoor parties by the river.

As this festival celebrates its heritage, water and entertainment. Part of the efforts also features a outdoor museum by the river. The Tiger Translate Museum.

For the first time, contemporary and pop art pieces and installations from more than 20 international modern art maestros will command attention at various public spaces along the Singapore River. Tiger Translate is part of Tiger Beer’s global initiative to highlight artistic talent in various creative fields through a series of exhibitions, events and publications.

The showcase also features an interactive element, where the public can ‘unveil’ art pieces along the underpasses by peeling off the decals covering the panels. They may even stand a chance to take home a replica of their favourite piece.

I was amazed at how capable artists are at using these tools of art to communicate with their audiences. Just by a mere underpass frequented by the morning rush and the late night crowd, art is able to reach people at a different platform.

Besides the Tiger Translate, the festival also featured Clarke Quay's River Party including concerts on the river with international and local artistes. This year's highlights of the festival were the spectacular bumboat parade and dance drama "Legenda Singapura" by Singapore River Cruises, Singapore River's first ever mega illusion show "The Impossible Journey" by J C Sum and "Magic Babe" Ning @ Central, the 10-day Timbre MusicFest at Empress Place, pub walks by Journeys and outdoor parties, among others.

The Singapore River Festival's major highlight was holding the event in conjunction with the Singapore Grand Prix Season for the first time. For those who have missed it this year, don't be disheartened, as there are more Singapore GP to be expected in the near future! The deafening sounds of the race could also be heard even from Bugis Street! Fernando Alonso is the man who has stamped his name in the history books with victory for Renault in the 2008 FORMULA ONE™ Singtel Singapore Grand Prix. Breath-taking experience of a night race, one must never miss!

Date: 19 Sept to 28 Sept
Venue: Singapore River
Ticketing of Singapore River Festival: Free Admission unless otherwise stated
